Editorial principles
Suggested editorial principles for the filiation of piano rolls. An edition in the Roll Edition Format names those it follows among the principles of its creation, see EditionCreation.principles, whether the editor applied them or a program did, and an inference names those it applies, see Inference.applies. The following principles were used in the edition of Welte-Mignon roll 225.

At the same time, superfluous or ineffective perforations are usually removed in later stages.deSpätere Fassungen weisen in der Tendenz mehr und dichtere Dynamikstanzungen auf als frühere. Gleichzeitig werden in späteren Stadien überflüssige oder effektlose Stanzungen in der Regel entfernt.

Explaining redundancies
deRedundanzen erklären rdf:typecrminf:I3_Inference_Logiccrm:E29_Design_or_Procedurecrm:E33_Linguistic_Objectcrm:P190_has_symbolic_content-
enEditing steps are to be ordered so that they explain how redundancies arose. Ex negativo: edits never turn an existing redundancy into something meaningful by insertions. A crescendo on after a crescendo on may thus be the trace of a preceding edit and so, by its exact position, possibly allow conclusions about the order of the edits.deBearbeitungsschritte sind so anzuordnen, dass sie die Entstehung von Redundanzen erklären – bzw. ex negativo: Bearbeitungen wandeln niemals durch Einfügungen eine bestehende Redundanz in etwas Sinnvolles. Crescendo an nach Crescendo an kann also die Spur einer vorhergehenden Bearbeitung sein und damit durch seine exakte Position möglicherweise Rückschlüsse auf die Reihenfolge der Bearbeitungen zulassen.

enA roll re-cut for another reproducing system went through an editorial pass of its own. What it lacks of the version it was cut from therefore says little about where it was cut from, and counts for less than what other versions lack.deEine für ein anderes Wiedergabesystem umgestanzte Rolle ging durch einen eigenen Bearbeitungsgang. Was ihr von der Fassung fehlt, nach der sie gestanzt wurde, sagt daher wenig darüber, wonach sie gestanzt wurde, und zählt weniger als das, was anderen Fassungen fehlt.
